SALAR DE UYUNI
La Paz Bolivia
“The most endearing thing about Bolivia is its everything.”
A stunning retreat
An off-road adventure
That’s how you can describe Bolivia. Rough around the edges, superlative in its natural beauty, rugged, vexing, complex and slightly nerve-racking, one of the highest and most remote countries on earth, much of Bolivia remains untouched by the passage of time. It is one of South America’s most diverse and perplexing nations.
An evocative and eerie sight, Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat. A pure white expanse of the greatest nothing imaginable with a perfectly blue reflection of the clouds and the disappearing horizon, it’s a sight that feels surreal. We’re already falling short of words to describe this one.
One of the most important folkloric and cultural events, this annual festival features over 28,000 dancers and 10,000 musicians. With a signature Devil dance marking its beginning, it is considered to retain most of the artistic expression coming from pre-Columbian America.
Dubbed as ‘the world’s most dangerous road’ Yungas Road runs from La Paz to Bolivia’s Amazon rainforest region. Surrounded by mountainous terrain and terrifying precipices, it is extremely popular among moto-enthusiasts for its exhilarating and death-defying bike ride.
The region shines for its tropical savanna climate, Jesuit Missions, fascinating wildlife and unique natural history. Not so tourist crowde and with sights such as the mysterious rock formations of the the Santiago de Chiquitos Mirador and the hot thermal springs of AguasCalientes as well as activities such as jaguar watching and sandboarding, it is superb for people who like it offbeat.
Home to the highest wine producing region of the world, Bolivia produces some of the finest wines of South America. Wouldn’t a glass or two in this pleasantly mild Caribbean climate and easily walkable colonial center a great reason to come here?
Bolivia’s Cordillera Real has more than 600 peaks over 5000m, most of which are relatively accessible. There are popular climbs in the Cordillera Real – but also fun treks, bikes and hikes here for non-climbers – you can build your own DIY adventure.
